What if I move-out mid-lease and want my deposit back?
Moving Out? How to Transfer Your Security Deposit
If you are moving out of a shared apartment but your roommates are staying, Whale typically holds the security deposit until the entire lease ends.
However, if you need your deposit back now, you can perform a Deposit Transfer. This allows a remaining or new roommate to replace your deposit so Whale can release your funds to you.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Coordinate with your Roommates
Before contacting Whale, agree with your roommates on who will be taking over your deposit responsibility. Whale must receive the full amount from the new person before we can release your funds.
2. Email Whale Support
Send an email to support@gowhale.com with the following information:
- Subject: Deposit Transfer - [Your Address & Unit Number]
- The Details: State that you are moving out and provide the Full Name and Email Address of the roommate who will be paying the replacement deposit.
3. The New Deposit Holder Completes the Request
Whale will email a payment link to your roommate. Once they pay the full deposit amount through the Whale platform, we begin the transfer process.
4. Receive Your Refund
As soon as the new payment is confirmed and locked to the lease, Whale will automatically trigger the release of your original deposit.
💡 Essential Things to Know
- Maintaining Coverage: Whale cannot "refund" you first and "collect" later. The new roommate must pay first. Once their funds are secured, yours are released.
- Processing Time: Once the new roommate pays, it typically takes 3–5 business days for the banking system to clear the funds and for your refund to be initiated.
