What if I don’t have an SSN or ITIN number?

If you do not yet have a Tax ID (SSN or ITIN), you can still fund your deposit with Whale. However, your Whale account cannot be fully opened until you provide an SSN or ITIN.

Here's how to fund a deposit without a Tax ID:

  1. When reaching the Tax ID step in Whale's create account flow, select “I don’t have an SSN or ITIN”.
  2. Follow instructions on how to fund your deposit by sending funds to Whale (instead of directly to your individual Whale account).
  3. Once Whale receives the funds, we'll confirm the deposit has been received and provide instructions on how you can get an SSN or ITIN.
  4. Once you get your SSN or ITIN, you must return to Whale to finish opening their account.

How to obtain a tax ID

Choose one of the two free options below to obtain a Tax ID.

  • Request an ITIN: best if you're not planning to work in the United States (e.g. international students)
  • Apply for a SSN: for those planning to work while in the United States

Note: Some payment methods might not be available without a Tax ID.
